Timeline of John Flynn's Life
• 1880 born in the town of Moliagul in Victoria on the 25th of November
• 1882 Flynn's mother died during child birth
• 1898 Graduated from secondary school and began school teaching
• 1903 he served in the bush within the pioneering districts of beech forest and Buchan and without being actually qualified as a minister he would preach the gospel.
• 1909 he worked as a missionary, setting up a hostel in Beltana in northern South Australia.
• 1910 Flynn created a book of hints for people living in the outback, which was called "The Bushman's Companion".
• 1911 he was ordained as a Minister of the Presbyterian Church through study at the university of Melbourne
• 1912 he wrote a report on the life in the Northern Territory and presented it to the Presbyterian church, he prompted the General Assembly to listen to his suggestions and he was appointed to lead a new organisation which was called the Australian inland mission which lead to the setting up of 15 hospitals and going out and listening to the people
• 1913 Flynn developed his magazine "The Islander" which identified the need for helping people in rural areas
• 1914-1918 WWI airplanes were flying longer distances and Flynn realised that these machines could fly nurses and doctors to rural areas. He went and organised fund-raising events in each capital city. He used this not only as a way to collect funds from the general public but as a way to raise awareness as well.
• 1925 Flynn declared, "the practicality of the flying doctor proposal depends almost entirely on the widespread adoption of wireless by bush residents' to provide the link between doctor and patient."
• 1926 the hostel in South Australia developed into 10 different centres around the area by Flynn
• 1928 an airplane leased from Qantas flew doctors and nurses to the outback.
• 1929 regularly met with members of the parliament and the Presbyterian Church in order to gain funds to support the service.
• 1929 the pedal radio was developed with the help of Flynn so people living in isolation were able to call on the Flying Doctor to assist them in an emergency. This lead to the ability to develop the School of the Air.
• 1932 John Flynn married Jean Blanch Baird in Sydney.
• 1933 he was granted Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his work on improving the safety and lifestyle of people living in rural areas
• 1934 Flynn convinced the government to support the Aerial Medical Service and it was officially established.
• 1939 Flynn was chosen as moderator-general of the Presbyterian Church of Australia
• In 1942 Flynn's Aerial Medical Service name was changed to being The Flying Doctor Service of Australia.
• 1951 Flynn died on the 5th of May, at the age of 71 from cancer.
